It's funny how some people think that their high school math knowledge is enough to fully understand the Lottery. They conclude that it is impossible to obtain a mathematical advantage in the game. I often hear it said, “well there's about a 1 in 8 million chance that a set of numbers will come in, so it doesn’t matter how you play them, they all have an even chance to win.”

Really? OK then, I’ll bet my house against yours that you will NEVER get the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in the lottery for as long as you live. And you know what? I’d win.

The fact is, even though PROBABILITY tells us that the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 will come up with the same chance as say 4, 13, 19, 22, 31, 44, STATISTICS tells us that the likelyhood of each number group winning is HUGELY different. In all the lotto games in all the world from the time of recorded results, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has NEVER won a single lottery game, anywhere!

So what are the differences in analysis here? Well, that's a tricky question. For example, here is a math formula used in the design of lottery systems:

While most of us don't really understand the math used to make sense of the lottery, we do know that it's possible to play Lotto smarter. Let's look at an example.

Imagine playing 84 games using a combination of 24 numbers. Its pretty likely that even if we hit six numbers out of those 24 we still won't win anything. On the other hand, using those 84 games as a system 9 (using nine selected numbers), we guarantee winning the jackpot if any 6 of our 9 numbers are drawn. This is an example of intelligent lottery play.

So in essence, winning at Lotto is all about maximizing the value of your lottery dollar by playing smart. But for some people, $42 for a system 9 is too expensive to play weekly. That's why other clever combinations of numbers can reduce the cost of play significantly, yet still give us the best chance of jackpot success.
